Polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects the functioning of a woman’s ovaries. The treatment of PCOS begins with lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and regular exercise. A rate of 5-10% weight loss has been shown improve the menstrual cycle and the symptoms caused by the syndrome. Particularly, foods with a low glycaemic index, foods rich in ‘good’ fats and lean protein may help reduce inflammatory markers and enhance the hormone level.

Clinical characteristics: ovarian dysfunction, infertility, and high androgen levels. Insulin resistance may be also observe.

Common symptoms: irregular or absent menstruation, acne, excessive hair growth or alopecia, difficulty maintaining a healthy weight.

In addition, women with PCOS may be at risk of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes.
